Most recently, she’s focused on practical, family-friendly travel guides for exploring Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Learn SEO early<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jessica first heard buzz about SEO in the 2010s, but as a new mom, she simply didn’t have the time or energy to dive in. Looking back, she knows this was a mistake. <\/p>\n\n\n

If I could do anything, I wish I had learned and implemented good SEO practices and started writing for my audience from the very beginning.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Once life settled down, she started going back and reworking some of her more popular posts. Before long, she noticed that these refreshed articles were ranking higher and higher<\/strong> \u2013 so she kept going. <\/p>\n\n\n

I also switched from a writing-for-myself perspective to writing helpful content for others. Of course, knowing SEO and good practices helps, but shifting my perspective helped my posts reach specific people who needed to read what I wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

2. Find your niche <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jessica and her family moved to Germany in the middle of the pandemic, so travel was limited to exploring her immediate surroundings. And so she did, sharing all her experiences on her blog and in a local Facebook group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s when she found out that many in her community were in a similar situation: they wanted to explore local destinations but didn\u2019t know where to start. <\/p>\n\n\n

3. Make it a habit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Keeping up a blog for 20+ years is no easy feat, but it\u2019s 100% doable if you keep a consistent schedule and don\u2019t overwork yourself. For Jessica, it\u2019s all about having certain days and hours dedicated to working on the blog. To avoid burnout, she\u2019ll only put in 2\u20133 hours of work at a time before stepping away from her computer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help her stay focused, she\u2019ll sometimes swap out her standing desk at home for a day at the coffee shop. Even then, she doesn\u2019t work more than 15 hours per week. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Jessica\u2019s story proves anything, it\u2019s that little bursts of creativity over a long period of time are the way to go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Diversify your income<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For most of her blogging life, Jessica wasn’t making real money. She had Google AdSense running in the background and occasionally dropped in Amazon links. Literally pennies, she’ll tell you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That changed after the pandemic, when she shifted her focus to family travel in Europe and began to take monetization more seriously. She moved from AdSense to SheMedia and began experimenting with affiliate marketing through Travelpayouts. It detects visitors who are showing signs of booking intent but never click anything, and opens a relevant offer in a background tab at the moment they’re most likely to act. In other words, it monetizes the readers her links never captured. Her best month so far this year was April, when Targeted Offers alone brought over $1,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jessica’s story isn’t about overnight success. It took her two decades to figure out what worked, and a few more years to build the income to match. But the system she has now is simple, and it runs mostly without her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
