Mobile Apps: An affiliate tool overview

In addition to the web version of travel websites, partners are ready to attract traffic to the mobile applications of travel brands. At the moment, only four brands within Travelpayouts take into account sales via mobile applications: Level.Travel, Travelata, Hotellook, and Aviasales. You can also get traffic to your mobile app from the publishers by offering installation commissions or paying commissions to affiliates for in-app sales.

Tool overview

Mobile traffic accounts for more than half of all Internet traffic in 2021. People use mobile devices to search for information and shop online. If your company has a mobile application, partners in the Travelpayouts affiliate network will help you get new users and sales.

Reward models

There are three popular payout models:

  1. Pay to install the app – You pay once to install, this model is called CPI, cost per install.
  2. Pay for an action in an application (for example, the purchase of a service) – You pay every time a user that was attracted by a partner makes a purchase.
  3. Combined option – You pay per install and per action. This option is the least common.

In the first case, when you pay for an installation, you incur a fixed cost for each installation. This method is called CPI or Cost per Install. Without affiliate moderation, you can get motivated traffic, which may not “pay off” in the end, since new mobile app users may not make purchases. In the case of commissions for installations, it is very important to monitor the quality of your traffic.

Payment for actions is more transparent for you and more profitable for partners with high-quality traffic. The more high-quality traffic the partners have, the higher their earnings, and the more sales for you.

You can pay partners not only for sales, but for any action you want to commission. For example, you can pay for click-outs or any other action that can be accurately tracked in your app. However, paying for the sale of a product or service is the most common solution.

Payment term of remuneration

In the case of the regular web version, clients are assigned to the partner who attracted them, as a rule, for the lifetime of the cookie. This lifespan ranges from one session to 365 days, but is often 30 days or one month.

For mobile applications, cookies are typically not installed on the user’s device and partners get commissions for actions taken for a certain period of time after the initial app installation.

The time for which the partner is assigned to the user may differ from your rules. For example, in the Aviasales affiliate program, actions are paid for the entire period as long as the application is installed on the user’s phone. This is actually a “lifetime” commission, which applies for the entire life of the smartphone.

The long term for which sales are credited to the partner attracts many experienced webmasters. Unlike cookies, which can be “beaten” by other traffic sources, once installed, an application can earn a partner’s commissions for years. However, this does not mean that you have to pay for the actions of one user forever.

Taking into account the fact that users change their phone on average once every two years, the user is assigned to a partner for the same timeframe. On a new device, as a rule, the user is considered new and is no longer assigned to any partner, if said user independently installed the application on that new device.

Promotion examples

Some partners are ready to share your mobile application with their audience even if you do not pay for such actions. But, as a rule, paid actions in the application lead partners to intensively distribute it. For example, the JetRadar mobile app is often mentioned on YouTube:

People use affiliate links in their videos, for example:

Partners are interested in reviewing and distributing apps that pay installation or sales commissions. You will get reviews of your mobile app or your app will be listed in some travel application lists and other sources.

Applications are distributed through all channels allowed by the affiliate program, for example, on travel bloggers’ websites or mailing lists.

Sales are counted in mobile apps for several brands in the Travelpayouts affiliate network. You and your partners can find all available options using the filter of sales attribution:

Alternative options

In addition to basic sales accounting in your official mobile application, you can offer partners several additional options:

  • SDK – A set of tools showing which partners can integrate your services into their existing application or create a new standalone mobile application. More details can be found at this link.
  • Mobile White Label – A special application that partners can distribute with their name and logo. More details can be found in this article.

In addition to tools tailored specifically for mobile applications, partners can use the API to process data in the mobile application or use the classic White Label to offer travel services to users through the Web View mode.

Mobile traffic has experienced a steady upward trend from year to year. If you have a mobile application and want to attract more users, offer rewards to partners for actions with your mobile app. Thanks to affiliate marketing, you will only pay for targeted actions, such as installations, purchases, or other actions within the application. In the Travelpayouts affiliate network, you will have access to 300,000 partners around the world and 10 years of team expertise.
